Elizabeth Bennet Recipe

So, I am reading Pride and Prejudice right now for the 3rd time (I think) and I can't put it down. I have already read it, know what is going to happen and have also watched the A&E version a million times. I know this story! What makes this book so good? Yes, the romance, yes, it is well written, but it is the characters that carry this story. They are all so real and we have all met our fair share of Mr. Collins' and Mr. Wickham's. I always get something different out of a book when I read it in another stage in life. I think I was either in high school or a freshman in college the last time I read it and I have changed quite a bit since then. Elizabeth Bennet, though not perfect, is such an amiable, intelligent, witty, fun, girl. Her sister Jane is equally as pleasant, so very sweet, and just so good. I would take either of those girls as my daughters.

Another Day

As a stay-at-home mom, sometimes it is easy to feel stuck in a rut, or rather feel sort of Groundhog's Day-like.  I am always doing the same thing (or at least it sometimes feels like that). Babies need predictable, scheduled days, so you do end up doing a lot of the same things and then there is always the un-ending laundry, dishes, dinners, and other chores to do around the house.

I was talking with a friend of mine about this and it started to get me thinking about what can make it all a little easier or at least more fun. I made a set of goals a little while back which have helped me to feel better about myself and has given me more purpose.

New Year, new blog

I have been wanting to change this blog for over a year now. I suppose I have felt rather bored with it and it needed some sort of direction. I have been thinking and looking at several other blogs and decided that not very many people write from my perspective in life. So many "mom" blogs are about their families, house, crafting, etc. They all already have their house, their husbands have "real" jobs, all their children are born and they seem financially stable. What about people like me? We have one little babe, just graduated from college and my husband is getting ready to go back for more, I'm at home with said baby and waiting for the day when I can fulfill my dream of having a beautiful old house filled with children. Right now, we are barely scraping along, but we are oh, so happy!

I plan on writing about parenting, being a wife, cooking/baking, cleaning, crafting (from the perspective of a very un-crafty person, with a rather crafty husband) and I will still write some family posts. Basically, I want to write about what it is like to be a young, poor stay-at-home mom and wife. I want to focus on the positive and make my home (wherever it is) a beautiful place.

If you were wondering about the new blog title, I got it from the song ,"I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' " written by George Gershwin.  The lyrics are:
I got plenty of nothing
And nothing's plenty for me
I got no car - got no mule
I got no misery

Folks with plenty of plenty
They've got a lock on the door
Afraid somebody's gonna rob 'em
While there out (a) making more - what for

I got no lock on the door - that's no way to be
They can steal the rug from the floor - that's OK with me
'Cause the things that I prize - like the stars in the skies - are all free

I got plenty of nothing
And nothing's plenty for me
I got my gal - got my song
(I) Got heaven the whole day long
- Got my gal - got my love - got my song

I thought it was pretty true to my life. I love this version sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

So, things will be changing around here and I plan on blogging more frequently as well. Get excited. Well, you don't have to, but I am.

Finally...

We got some snow on Saturday! We have not really had any snow since before Halloween, there have been a few flurries here and there, but not much. Everyone keeps telling me that this is not very typical of Utah. I was excited for snow, so I have been a bit bummed about the lack thereof.

Christmas, part four: Christmas Day

After we opened presents at my parent's house, we headed over to Tyler's Mom/Mema's house for breakfast before we went to church at 11am. It was really nice to have church on Christmas because we were taking time to talk (well, we listened) about Christ on the day we remember his birth. The whole reason we have Christmas is because of Christ and it is so easy to forget and get all caught up in presents and cooking and decorating. None of these above things are bad (I love them in fact!), but it is important to remember  why we have this most wonderful time of the year.

Christmas, part three: early Christmas morning

We spent the night at my parents house and got up early to do Santa's presents and the rest of the gifts. We then spent the rest of the day with Tyler's family.

We did not get very many pictures during the morning, but we did get two videos.

Christmas, part two: Christmas Eve

We spent Christmas Eve and the few days before with my family. We have a lot of traditions on Christmas Eve, so it is my favorite part of Christmas.

Christmas, part one

I have a ton to catch up on! I might just post several smaller posts about Christmas and even do a few today.

First, we set up our Christmas tree a little before Elanor's birthday. We were rather disappointed we were not able to get a tree from a farm (my first time ever not). We got our tree at Smith's Marketplace (it is like a Fred Meyer) and it dried out a lot more quickly than usual because it was probably cut awhile ago in Oregon and shipped to Utah. It was quite a lovely tree though and I am ashamed to say that I never got a proper picture of it or any of our other decorations. We were pretty busy before we left for Oregon making gifts and somehow I never got around to getting a picture. I planned on taking some when we got back, but I forgot until after we already took everything down.
