I Had a Baby: part one

I assume most people know I had my baby, but perhaps you don't know the full story! I like to hear/read birth stories, and maybe others out there do as well. This is for those people and anyone else interested. This will be long mind you and I don't usually like reading super long blog posts, so I'll try and keep it as trim as possible.

I posted last when I was 37 weeks along (on a Saturday). I mentioned in that post that I had had some minor contractions/pressure. On Sunday night, I had quite a few more contractions and they woke me up. However, they were spread out and inconsistent, but they were painful. I did not really want to have my baby that week as I still had a lot to get done and I still had three weeks left! So on Monday, I decided to take it easy. I did not do my usual yoga, or go on a walk, and tried not to do too much. It did not work. My body wanted to go into labor. I had contractions intermittently throughout the day; sometimes with hours in between and sometimes closer together. Around dinner time, my contractions were 15 minutes apart and then progressed to 10 minutes apart and finally to 7. I thought that perhaps this was the real deal! However, when I laid down to go to sleep, the contractions slowed down and were every 20 minutes and then every 30 minutes. I did continue to have them throughout the night and they did wake me up as they were semi painful.

The next day was Tuesday and Tyler very conveniently never works on Tuesdays. I called my mom in the morning and told her what was going on. We thought maybe it was false labor. I had a doctors appointment already scheduled for that afternoon, which was perfect so I could get checked out and ask my midwife what was going on. I continued to have contractions during the day, but they were about every 20-30 minutes. We decided to run a few errands and pick up a few things we really needed if the baby did decide to make her appearance this week. As we were shopping, the contractions did get a little closer together and a bit more painful, but still not bad at all. In the afternoon, we headed up to the doctors appointment (Elanor was at the Pitchers house). My midwife checked me and said I was dilated to a 3! She thought I could have the baby tonight or in the next few days. She was also concerned because my belly was measuring really small, partly because the baby had dropped, but she wanted me to get an ultrasound to make sure everything was fine (especially check and see if my amniotic fluid was low). She was also concerned because I had a little protein in my urine and slightly elevated blood pressure (still not outside the norm, but was outside my norm). So, we headed up to the hospital for the ultrasound and everything looked fine. The ultrasound tech estimated the baby being around 5 lbs 6 oz or something like that (they are not super accurate). I then went and had my blood drawn for some tests. By this time, my contractions were definitely closer together, maybe every 8-10 minutes.

The doctors appointment and then the ultrasound and tests took quite a long time, so we did not get home until about 5 or 5:30. Once home, I decided to start getting my stuff packed to take to the hospital. Tyler started making me some food and cleaning the house as much as possible. Elanor was home with us briefly as I wanted to see her before we had to inevitably leave. She was a bit concerned as I was now no longer able to talk through my contractions very well. They progressed very quickly at this point and went from 7 minutes apart to 5 to 4 in just 45 minutes or so. They also got very painful. For some reason, the best way for me to handle the contractions was to be on my hands and knees. I'm not sure why and I'm glad I labored at home for awhile so I felt more comfortable.  It was obvious now that I was going to have this baby tonight. So, Tyler packed Elanor a bag for the night and took her back to the Pitcher's house. Tyler wanted to keep cleaning, but by this time my contractions were almost 2 minutes apart and I just felt like we should go to the hospital right then. We had called our family and let them know and my mom got in the car and started driving the 11 hours to Salt Lake as soon as I told her I was in labor. She's pretty great!

We left for the hospital around 6:30 pm and realized on our way up that we had forgot the camera. So, we called the Pitchers to have them bring it up. We had to walk in through the Emergency Room and they wheeled me up to an area where they first check you and make sure you're in labor before admitting you to labor and delivery. They made me sit on a bed, hooked me up to check my blood pressure (which was super high), and asked me questions. My contractions were very painful and it was really hard to sit in a bed and not move while having a contraction. Tyler put pressure on my lower back during a contraction, which helped quite a bit. I had to get an IV put in unfortunately, as I had tested positive for having Strep B (a common bacteria that women sometimes have and sometimes don't, but it can be harmful to the baby). They had an MA do it and she was nice but for some reason could not get an IV in my very large and obvious veins. I got a few bruises from her. So, she called in a nurse and she did it in one try. I rather wish the nurse had done it to begin with as it took about a half hour for the MA to mess up a few times. All the while I am having painful contractions during all the poking. It was not so bad, mostly just a bit annoying.

They checked me and said I was dilated to a 5. We waited for a bit and all the while I felt like these contractions were getting more intense. I did not have an epidural with Elanor's birth and did not want one for this one either. My labor with Elanor was so long and I kept thinking was it this painful only a few hours in with Elanor? Did I really have another 8 hours to go? They finally decided to admit me to labor and delivery (I'm guessing we were there for 45 minutes to an hour) and wheeled me over to a room. The MA asked me if I wanted a birthing ball and my contractions were happening so fast at this point, it was hard for me to talk. Tyler said sure and then she wanted to know what size and he said it did not matter. Our nurse came in and said something and I stood up. All of a sudden, I felt the intense desire to push. I told them I needed to push. They told me I shouldn't and to get up on the bed so they could check my dilation. I told her I could not move. I leaned on Tyler and he helped me stay up. I could feel the baby in the birth canal but could not speak well enough at the time to say anything. I had a contraction and could not stop myself from pushing. The nurse yelled for someone to get a doctor. There were not doctors close by, but there was a Resident. The Resident came in and told me I did not need to move and she could check me where I was standing. She looked down there and said something about the baby coming. I had another contraction and pushed and out came my baby in a flood of water (my water broke as the baby came out--best and easiest way to do it by the way)!

{Mind you, this all happened in a matter of maybe 5 minutes from when I stood up, to when our baby was born.}

The Resident caught her, they said something about the cord being short and needing to cut it and Tyler did.  My baby was screaming (she clearly had a good set of lungs), but was so tiny! They quickly got me on the bed and handed me my baby. She calmed down as she lay on my chest. They covered us in warm blankets and Tyler and I had a lovely moment to look at our new baby. I held my baby and nursed her and cuddled for quite a long time. Tyler let our family know she was born and also called Becky and had her bring Elanor up. Our baby was born at 7:57, so it was not all that late for Elanor.  Elanor was up there by 8:30 and it was wonderful for her to be there so soon after and meet her new sister, which at this point still did not have a name! After Elanor left, we had her weighed and measured. She was so tiny at 4 lbs 13 oz! They measure babies in the hospital from head to toe, instead of heel, so she was 18.9 inches, though really she was 18.5 inches from head to heel.

I was a bit concerned about why she was so small and the Resident told me that I had Preeclampsia. It has several symptoms, but the only ones I had were the protein in my urine and the high blood pressure (it was apparently super high while I was in labor). Preeclampsia is cured when the baby is born, but it can be really dangerous and they induce you if you have it. My body went into labor all on its own early, which was so much better than being induced. The nurse kept saying that my body knew just what to do. The reason our baby was so small was because of the Preeclampsia. It does something where the blood flow between the mom, the placenta and the baby is not very good, so the baby does not get as much food as it should. It only happens near the end of the pregnancy and my body going into labor was exactly what it needed to do for both me and my baby to be safe. I feel really grateful and blessed that it happened this way. Plus, this labor was really easy! Sure the contractions were painful, but it was only really intense for two hours. I also only pushed twice! Granted, she was so small, so that made it easier. I also think that having my water break as the baby came out made it so much easier. So, for anyone out there, don't let the doctor/midwife break your water, let it come on its own!

Once I was cleared as being stable, they moved us over to the postpartum rooms. Once there, there was still a lot to go over and nurses to meet, and vitals to check, etc., but when Tyler and I had quiet moment, we had time to think about names. We had a few names we liked, and a middle name (either Julia or Juliet depending on which first name we went with). I asked Tyler what he was thinking and he said he felt Alice was right. I had been thinking the same thing. We decided on Alice Juliet. It just fit.

So here she is,
Alice Juliet Laurent
born on March 31st, 2015 at 7:57 pm weighing 4 lbs. 13 oz., and 18.5 inches long:
So small!

And there is quite a bit more to the story, as Alice had to stay in the hospital for five days, IVs, twilight rooms, etc. However, this is already plenty long, so more on that later!

37 Weeks

These last couple months have gone by really fast as we were back and forth in Utah and Oregon (working on the play). Now I am 37 weeks, which means the baby is full term and can come at any time! We are so excited to meet this new little girl. However, I would prefer if she came after Easter as we still have a lot to get done before she comes.

So, here I am at 37 weeks:
Elanor really wanted to be in the picture!

These pictures were both taken at 37 weeks. I'm pregnant with baby #2 in the one on the left and with Elanor on the right. I think I look pretty similar in size.

I am really grateful that I have really easy pregnancies. I am not too easily tired, have plenty of energy, I don't swell anywhere, and I generally feel good! I had an appointment this past week and I am already dilated 1cm, and today and last night I felt like I had some minor contractions or pressure of some sort. As I said above, I would prefer her to come after Easter, but who knows? I would be excited either way! Elanor was born five days early, so it is possible this baby could be a little early or I could be pregnant for another month! Whatever the case, we will have a baby soon!

The Weekly Photo + Pregnancy Talk

6 1/2 months or  27 weeks + 3 days or 192 days pregnant.

Also, I'm in the third trimester! So, just 3 months left, that is a little over 12 weeks my friends.

I have received a lot of comments on how I am so big this pregnancy, which I don't really mind. However, my weight gain has been about the same and though I showed earlier, I think in the long run I will be about the same size. I do carry a bit bigger anyways. I am pretty average in height (slightly on the shorter end), but I have a short torso. So, I have a pretty large, round belly.

Here are some comparison pictures (same shirt as well):

Pregnant with Elanor at 29 weeks.
Pregnant with baby #2 at 27 weeks.
People are also always asking me how I'm feeling and usually I always say "good". In truth, I have really easy pregnancies. My first trimester was a lot more difficult than it was with Elanor. I threw up and felt nauseous way more often. I also had aversions to most food! However, compared to many that are really truly sick, it was not bad at all. Ever since the second trimester started, I have felt great! I have plenty of energy and I love feeling my baby move! Sure, sleeping can be uncomfortable, but I don't have much to complain about.

If anyone is interested, here are some things I do that make my pregnancies easier:
1. I don't eat sugar.
Sure, occasionally I'll have a tiny bite (Christmas time was hard!) and I have had a few mugs of hot chocolate (made with unsweetened chocolate or unsweetened cocoa, milk and raw honey-a less refined and better form of sugar). It can be hard, but worth it! There is less weight gain, I'm healthier, and all that sugar could very well effect a little baby's developing brain.
2. I do yoga every morning.
I did not do this when I was pregnant with Elanor. It has been so nice to do this! The breathing exercises really helped in the 1st trimester with nausea. It not only strengthens my body, but gives me energy to start the day. There are quite a few pregnancy yoga videos on youtube. Also, do your Kegels.

I guess that is pretty much it. Other than that, I just do what I normally do. A little school with Elanor, walks, clean the house, play with Elanor, make breakfast, lunch and dinner, run errands, eat, read, relax with Tyler in the evening…the regular stuff. I also taught ballet. I just stopped, since we will hopefully be moving soon.

So, yes being pregnant. It is on my mind and I'm so glad to finally be pregnant after all the waiting. I am savoring the experience and not complaining since it was so hard to get pregnant in the first place. I am grateful (in a sense), that we went through that, because it has made me a lot more grateful for this experience. So, for me, right now, being pregnant is pretty much the best.

The Weekly Photo

I know, I know. You already saw these photos! But, finding out our baby's gender was the biggest thing that happened last week. Also, The Weekly Photo was started as a challenge to help me take more pictures and the photo chosen for the week was to be the picture that most accurately described our past week, or showed a big event, etc. Thus, these two same photos are on here again.
Baby girl's profile.

Me, at 18 1/2 weeks.
It is Thanksgiving this week! As most people know, obviously.  I love Thanksgiving and we are again doing it at our house. I actually really enjoy making the Thanksgiving feast. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

We're Having….

...a girl!

We had the ultrasound on Tuesday and it was a lot of fun because an ultrasound tech was teaching an intern, so we we able to have a super long ultrasound. It was wonderful to see our baby girl move around, cross her legs, touch her face, stretch out, etc. It was also very relieving to see that she was healthy and everything was normal.

Cute little profile!

She is definitely a girl! Tyler knew even before I did and before the tech said anything, when they passed over this area before checking gender.
Foot!

Crossed legs.

If you feel like watching 6 minutes of the ultrasound, here it is:

We did not have any preference on gender, but are very happy to be having a girl. It certainly makes it easier, since we already have girl stuff! Elanor is very excited to have a little sister and she will be such a great big sister. I love having a sister and my sister and I are really close (I wish she lived right next to me!), so I really hope Elanor and this new little girl have that as well.

Here I am at 18 1/2 weeks.

Everyone keeps telling me that I look huge and must be carrying twins, but my doctor assured me that I am normal, and any second or subsequent pregnancies are usually bigger at first, but the same over the whole course of pregnancy. Plus, I have only gained 8 pounds and they want me to have gained 10 by 20 weeks, so I am right on track. Also, the baby is exactly right on for size, so not big or small, just right.

I keep meaning to write more pregnancy posts, so that I keep better track of this pregnancy than I did the first. So hopefully, I can write more of these!

Big Stuff Happening...

I have been writing this blog post in my head for a few years now. I was always thinking of what I would write when I found out I was pregnant. However, years went by, and I did not get pregnant. Years. I wanted to have my children quite close. 18-24 months between Elanor and the next baby, would be ideal, I thought. My sister and I are 19 months apart and I have always loved being so close in age to my sister and we have always been the best of friends. I wanted something similar for Elanor. As it turns out, you cannot plan (at least things that are out of your control). I have learned that lesson multiple times. This one was hard though. What pained me the most was how often Elanor asked for a sibling. All of her friends have siblings, and she did not. We have thankfully lived next to the Pitchers for the last few years and those boys have been pretty close to brothers for Elanor.

We finally went and met with some fertility doctors last year. There was a problem and most likely an expensive one. However, Tyler ended up having a super busy year last year (80 hour school and work weeks!!) and he did not have the time to meet with the doctors some more. This summer, once Tyler was done with everything, we decided to meet with our fertility doctor again. There were a few more tests and it was determined that in vitro fertilization was our only option. We had been told this last year as well and the idea had seemed so unwanted at the time. I did not want to have doctors make me pregnant and have to do all the shots, and pay all the money and then it might not even work. However, over the course of the year, I talked myself into it and decided I was being a bit selfish and things do not always happen the way I want them, but that does not make them worse, just different.

BUT--
a week and half after meeting with our fertility doctor, I found out I was pregnant!!! As in, the seemingly impossible happened. We were both in a bit of shock. We had been told we would not be able to get pregnant naturally and we had obviously wanted to get pregnant for the past almost three years! Yes, friends, I am having a baby! Me!

So--the info:
I am due April 18th,
which means I am 12 1/2 weeks along,
so 3 months done, 6 to go.
We find out if it is a girl or a boy in November.
Yes, Elanor and our new baby will be over 4 years apart,
but Elanor will be such an awesome big sister (she loves babies!).

We are so incredibly excited! I learned a lot these past 2 1/2 years of not being able to get pregnant. I learned a lot about gratitude. I am so grateful that I have the most wonderful husband, that loves and takes care of me and is such a wonderful father. Plus, we have such a hilarious, smart, and beautiful daughter. I felt continually blessed with what I already had, and I know many people don't have these things. I learned that I needed my Heavenly Father more, and He helped us all as a family. I am not sure why we were able to get pregnant now, but I do know it was quite a miracle.

We told Elanor by giving her two gifts. One was a "best sister" shirt and the other was the book, "Baby Dear" (which is out of print, but I found it in a book with all the books by the author who wrote "Baby Dear"). "Baby Dear" is about a little girl who becomes a big sister and copies everything her mom does with her own baby doll. I loved the book when I was little as it has such cute illustrations.
Elanor with the gifts.

Here is Elanor's reaction:

Here I am a couple weeks ago--10 weeks along, I think. I am so huge already!

I guess I need to take another picture!

So, yes that is our big news. We could not be more excited!

Also, this is why I have not been a good blogger lately--I have not felt all that great. However, being sick is awesome, if it means I'm pregnant!

Introducing Elanor Susan Laurent...

She was born on Friday, December 10th at 4:16 pm and weighed 7lbs. 1oz. and was 20 3/4 in. long.

The story:

I woke up having contractions early Thursday morning and then had them inconsistently all day. I have my Contemporary Issues class from 7-9 Thursday evenings and I had to give a debate while having contractions, it probably was not my best public speaking experience. I started having more regular contractions around 9 and they were every 10 minutes or so. By around 11pm they were every 7 minutes and by around 2:30am they were every 5. Tyler started getting really nervous when my contractions started getting regular and cleaned the whole house (as it had been disassembled because Treemont has been remodeling). I started packing for the hospital and getting everything reading. We left for the hospital around 3am and it was a 45 min. drive to Augusta Hospital. When we got there, I was only dilated to a 3. It ended up being a pretty long night. I had a great midwife and she really made labor easier. I really did not think that labor was that bad until the end. Waiting and not getting sleep were the worst parts, but the contractions with the breaks in between were not terrible. However, the final contractions and pushing the baby out were pretty painful, but I am really glad I did it naturally. I feel like I accomplished something worthwhile and of course Elanor was completely worth it.

Here she is about an hour after birth:

She was able to spend the first hour or however long I wanted with me. They gave her to me as soon as she came out! She was so beautiful!

Here she is holding Tyler's hand.

I was so exhausted after after labor and I stayed awake until she went to get tested and then I fell asleep. So, Tyler got to dress and bundle her all up.

The next day, I felt almost back to myself.

She is already a thinker.

Elanor and Tyler

We left the hospital as soon as we could on Sunday and here we are getting ready to leave.

Elanor has been a really pretty easy baby so far. She sleeps at night really well and has not really had any problems nursing either. My mom and Erik came on Saturday and it has been so nice having them here. My mom has helped out a lot. We are really excited for my dad and Ian to come on the 20th as well.

Here she is getting her first bath at home.

She is so cute!

Elanor and me

By the Christmas tree

Tyler thought she looked hilarious here

Tyler made Elanor a cradle. He did such a beautiful job and I love it!

Elanor sleeping in her cradle

Today (Elanor's 6th day) it snowed! This is taken out of Jessica's window. We had to go over to her house all day today because Treemont is remodeling our apartment.

Here she is 6 days old---The camera really makes her look chubbier, but she is so small. The camera adds weight...

Cute yawn.
We are so excited about our little girl and we are loving being parents. She is a beautiful girl and we are so blessed to have her.

We will have more pictures up soon of Christmas and then Tyler's mom is coming after Christmas and we will take more pictures then too!

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!
